Seasons Greetings

A happy New Year from the Blackpool & Fylde Green Party – from John Warnock (Co-ordinator)

Just before the COP21 meeting of nearly 200 nations on climate change in Paris, our local party tried raising awareness around climate change.  An excellent nonpolitical event was put on by Duncan Royle (Green Party member) at the Blackpool & Fylde College with two lecturers from Lancaster University.  The evening with Dr Andrew Jarvis, a climate change scientist, and independent researcher Rebecca Willis from the Green Alliance, who advise MP’s among others on climate change policy was very informative, with an interactive approach and audience participation.  All though attendance was disappointingly low, those who attended had their questions answered. The two lecturers covered a lot of subjects all connected to climate change. I’m not sure I came away feeling humanity will save its self but at least there is an opportunity and a small window to do what we can.

Last Christmas I received a book as a present, which I started reading with enthusiasm but soon ground to a halt.  Its content made me so angry about the way certain companies were allowed to destroy the natural environment without any thought for what was to come after them, or how to repair the irreparable. I didn’t pick the book back up again until late April, and some chapters I have read twice now. This book was Naomi Klein’s ‘This Changes Every Thing -Capitalism Verse’s The Climate, published by Allen Lane ISBN: 978-1-846-14505-6. It was full of argh bits, but some hope.

A couple of days after our local party event in the same week, a couple of us were lucky to go to Transition City Lancaster’s screening of ‘This Changes Everything’ the film, which was well attended. I was thinking the local party has the funds, and if there is enough interest, we could put on a screening with a discussion afterwards in the New Year, as it’s so relevant with this governments dash for gas locally.

I would just like to wish you all a happy New Year, and hope as the outgoing co-ordinator to see all Green Party members at the AGM on Thursday 14th January. I hope you are all refreshed for the long fight ahead.

John Warnock
